Merron Simpson

Merron is the director of New Realities ( specialising in ‘housing in the context of the place and people who live there’. She assists organisations to make more of their contribution to places and to people’s lives.

Merron has a Masters degree in housing studies and has worked in housing policy, strategy and research for around 18 years. She was Head of Policy at the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) between 2003 and 2008. In this role advised government on many areas of housing, provided vision and thought leadership to professionals working in housing and related professions and led the CIH’s policy work programme. She has also held research, policy and housing management positions within local authorities. Prior to her career in housing, Merron worked in research and development for two clinical diagnostics companies. Her first degree is in Biochemistry.

In her current role, she has undertaken projects for the Local Government Association, Dept of Health, Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, Housing Learning and Improvement Network, Young Foundation as well as several housing associations, local authorities, housing partnerships, shadow health and wellbeing boards and social enterprises. In current and previous roles Merron has authored many publications and resources on strategic housing and planning, coproduction and personalisation and hospital discharge to a suitable home.

Previous leadership roles include membership of the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) Policy Council and Board Member of a housing association specializing in older people. She is a Corporate Member of CIH. She has recently been appointed as a special advisor on housing for the NHS Alliance.
